Immigration policies could lead to mass deportations

The California Legislature will convene a special session this week to outline measures aimed at protecting the state from the immigration policies proposed by President-elect Donald Trump. These policies include strengthening border security, reversing Biden-era initiatives, and promoting mass deportations, sparking concern among Democrats in the "Golden State."

Senator Alex Padilla stated that California will not allocate state or local resources to carry out federal government duties. “We’re not going to use our resources to do their job,” he said during CBS's Face the Nation. Padilla warned that mass deportations would harm communities, damage the economy, and jeopardize public safety, as immigrants might fear coming forward to report crimes.

Despite their differences, Padilla noted that Democrats and Republicans could find common ground in prioritizing the deportation of violent criminals, a proposal emphasized by Trump’s allies. “There doesn’t need to be a conflict unless that’s what Trump wants,” he concluded.
