Mexican authorities highlight that over 3,000 vehicles have recently been seized at northern border customs due to similar violations

Mexican customs authorities have introduced new guidelines to enhance the oversight of vehicles regularized under decrees published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) between 2022 and 2024. These regulations aim to ensure that imported vehicles meet the established legal requirements, particularly regarding their acquisition date abroad and temporary import permits.

According to the General Directorate of the Public Vehicle Registry (Repuve), vehicles acquired abroad after October 19, 2021, or those with temporary import permits issued or valid after that date, cannot be regularized. This criterion aligns with the decrees promoting the regularization of used foreign vehicles, currently effective until September 30, 2026.

The General Directorate of Customs Legal Affairs (DGJA) stated that vehicles failing to meet these requirements will be subject to an Administrative Customs Procedure (PAMA). This applies to:

  • Regularized vehicles whose title of ownership indicates acquisition after October 19, 2021.
  • Vehicles with expired temporary import permits issued after the cutoff date and subsequently regularized.

These provisions will be strictly enforced during customs inspections and transportation merchandise verifications. Authorities report that over 3,000 vehicles have recently been seized at northern border customs for similar violations.

The measure seeks to prevent the use of irregular documentation and ensure that foreign vehicles comply with current Mexican regulations.
