It is referred to as "The University of the Future"

The city of Chula Vista is planning to build a new university on a 383-acre plot in the eastern part of the city, which is currently a vacant lot. This ambitious project has been dubbed "The University of the Future" by local leaders, such as Assemblymember David Alvarez, who expressed optimism: "After decades of attempts, we are now at a point where we know exactly which programs to offer and what the requirements are," he said.

Southwestern College conducted a study to assess the potential benefits of this university for students on both sides of the border, emphasizing the opportunity to provide better educational options for young people in the region. “I’m studying psychology and would like to specialize in neuroscience before transferring to a four-year university,” said Sidney Zazueta, a student at Southwestern College.

Recent results from a technical report helped identify key study areas and technical careers most needed in southern San Diego County to meet workforce demand. According to the report, careers in education, arts, telecommunications, and the medical field are especially in demand in the region. “More teachers and educators are needed,” added Alvarez.

The creation of this university would not only reduce the distance for many students but also benefit those who cross the border from Tijuana, providing them with closer and more accessible higher education opportunities.
