The standoff lasted five hours

A man was arrested early Friday morning following a nearly five-hour standoff at an apartment complex in Carmel Valley. According to San Diego Police Department (SDPD) public information officer Lt. Dan Meyer, officers responded to a domestic violence call on the 10600 block of Golden Willow Trail.

Upon arrival, officers heard gunshots from one of the units, prompting the activation of the special response team (SWAT), the emergency negotiations team, and a K-9 unit. Two people were in the apartment when the gunfire began. A woman managed to escape and was not inside when the suspect barricaded himself.

SWAT used containment tactics, including surrounding the area, employing megaphones, and eventually releasing gas. All nearby units in the complex were evacuated, and several surrounding streets were closed during the standoff.

The suspect finally surrendered around 5:45 a.m., following the use of gas and intervention by the K-9, which bit the man upon his capture. No injuries were reported from the initial gunshots, and the suspect was evaluated for possible injuries.

The tactical operation has now transitioned into an investigation, with the suspect facing allegations of domestic violence and unlawful discharge of a firearm. Meyer described the operation as “successful and safe for all members of our community.” Original report by Fox5SanDiego.
