What did Fernando Valenzuela die of?

After several days of being hospitalized in Los Angeles, California, Fernando Valenzuela passed away at the age of 63.

Valenzuela left an indelible mark on baseball history. Born on November 1, 1960, in Etchohuaquila, Sonora, his professional career began in the Mexican Pacific League with the Mayos de Navojoa in 1977. In 1979, he was signed by the Angeles de Puebla and later sent to the Leones de Yucatán, where he earned Rookie of the Year honors.

His success in Mexico caught the attention of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who signed him in 1979. Valenzuela made his Major League debut in 1980 and became a sensation in 1981, winning both the Rookie of the Year and the Cy Young Award. His fame skyrocketed with "Fernandomania," a phenomenon that made him a baseball superstar.

It was during the 1981 World Series that the pitcher won his first Fall Classic game, in a Dodgers vs. Yankees matchup—a series that will be replayed 43 years later, starting this Friday, likely with a well-deserved tribute to the Mexican legend.

What was the cause of Fernando Valenzuela's death?

Known as "El Toro," Valenzuela passed away due to liver complications stemming from diabetes, which ultimately led to multi-organ failure.

At the time of his hospitalization, the Los Angeles Dodgers issued a statement: "He and his family truly appreciate the love and support from the fans. He will do everything possible to return for the 2025 season [...] His family has asked for privacy during this time."
