San Diego threatens to take the division from the Dodgers

In a rare and dramatic finish, the San Diego Padres defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-2 last night, securing their spot in the playoffs. The victory came with a remarkable triple play, a rarity in the history of Major League Baseball, especially in such a heated rivalry.

Not only did the Padres clinch a Wild Card spot, but they are also closing in on first place in the National League West. They are now just two games behind the division-leading Dodgers, a position they haven't held since 2006.

The Padres have dominated the season series against the Dodgers, winning eight out of eleven matchups. If the two teams end the regular season tied, the division title would go to San Diego.

The game’s most notable moment came in the ninth inning. The Dodgers had runners on first and second with no outs when Miguel Rojas hit a ground ball to third base. Manny Machado fielded it, stepped on third, threw to second baseman Jake Cronenworth, who then relayed it to first for a stunning triple play.

After a brief review, the umpires confirmed the 5-4-3 triple play.

In Major League history, only 28 games have ended with a triple play, and this marks just the third in the Wild Card era.
