The extension could be for up to 36 additional months of validity

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has automatically extended the validity of Green Cards by 36 months for legal permanent residents who file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card.

Permanent residents who properly submit Form I-90 to renew an expiring or expired Green Card will receive this extension. Previously, Form I-90 receipt notices provided a 24-month extension.

USCIS has updated the language in Form I-90 receipt notices to reflect this 36-month extension from the expiration date on the current card for applicants with a newly submitted Form I-90. Since September 10, USCIS has begun issuing these amended receipt notices for pending cases.

These notices can be used along with an expired Green Card as proof of permanent resident status and employment authorization. The extension aims to assist applicants with extended processing times by providing continuous evidence of their status while awaiting their renewed card.

For those who no longer have their card and need proof of status while waiting for a replacement, USCIS offers the option to request an Alien Documentation, Identification & Telecommunications (ADIT) stamp at a local USCIS office. For more information, visit the USCIS page on Green Card renewal.

Remember to update your postal address through your USCIS online account if it changes while your case is pending.
