California, one of the favorite states for dogs

Dogs are by far the most popular pets in the United States, a trend that is particularly reflected in Southern California.

According to 2023 statistics from PetMD, 65.1 million American households have at least one dog. A report by U.S. News indicates that pet ownership and pet insurance sign-ups have increased significantly since 2020.

The report, which analyzed a database of registered insured dogs, broke down dog ownership at a city level and identified the 25 most popular cities for dogs in America.

Leading the list is Los Angeles; despite ranking 33rd on U.S. News' list of the top 50 U.S. cities for dog owners, L.A. is home to the largest number of dogs in the country. Data from the Los Angeles Almanac indicates that 561,176 households in Los Angeles have at least one dog, compared to approximately 320,000 households with cats in the city.
