AT&T has reported being a victim of an 'illegal data download

AT&T, the telecommunications company, has confirmed a serious security breach in 2022 that exposed call and text message records of nearly all its cellular phone customers, as well as those using its network through virtual operators and connected landlines.

In a statement released this Friday, AT&T stated: "We have taken steps to close the illegal access. We are cooperating with authorities in their efforts to arrest those involved in the incident. We understand that at least one person has been detained."

The company, which has over 100 million customers in the United States, detailed that the breach affects phone numbers involved in communications between May 1, 2022, and October 31, 2022, and a small number of customers from January 2, 2023.

AT&T attributed the breach to an "illegal download" on an external cloud data platform, which it became aware of in April while investigating another leak.

After working with cybersecurity experts to determine the incident's origin, AT&T assures that the data is no longer publicly accessible. The company plans to notify current and former customers whose information was affected, providing resources for protection.

According to reports, the leaked data does not include call or message contents, nor personal information such as Social Security numbers or birth dates. AT&T also confirms that communication times and line holder names were not disclosed, although this information can be obtained through online tools.
