The festival will take place in the "Hillcrest" area

The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) announced that it will begin installing streetlights equipped with surveillance and automatic license plate readers in Hillcrest and other strategic locations in preparation for the upcoming Pride festival.

These "smart streetlights" are intended to deter, investigate, and hold individuals accountable for criminal activities, according to police authorities and contractors.

The initiative aims to protect against hate crimes and ensure safety during large gatherings in the LGBTQ+ community center, the SDPD stated in their announcement. These smart streetlights will be integrated with Flock Safety's ALPR technology.

The return of the Smart Streetlights was approved last year by the San Diego City Council following public criticism that initially led former Mayor Kevin Faulconer to shut down the program. This move also prompted investigations by local media teams.

According to a surveillance impact report by the SDPD, the cameras do not use facial recognition and are only reviewed when there is a need for investigation. The locations are selected based on violent crime statistics and input from investigation units, patrol division commanders, residents, and council members.

While some residents support these measures to enhance street safety, others remain concerned about privacy implications.
