Today is Memorial Day: A tribute to Military Heroes

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, this date commemorates all the men and women who have died in military service for the United States. On this day, many people visit cemeteries and monuments, and it is traditionally considered the start of the summer season.

Memorial Day began as an event to honor Union soldiers who died in the American Civil War, inspired by Southern traditions. After World War I, it was expanded to commemorate all military personnel who died in any conflict. Originally called Decoration Day, the current name became popular after World War II. Initially celebrated on May 30, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was passed in 1968, and since 1971, Memorial Day has been observed on the last Monday of May. However, it took time for all states to adopt this date.

It is worth noting that Memorial Day is a state public holiday. State government offices are closed. Some schools and businesses may also close on this day.

Memorial Day Activities

It is traditional to fly the United States flag at half-staff from dawn until noon. Many people visit cemeteries and monuments, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries. In Mississippi, Memorial Day is combined with Jefferson Davis' Birthday.

This day has become a less solemn occasion for many. Many people choose to have picnics, sports events, and family gatherings over the weekend. This day is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season for cultural events. For fashion followers, it is considered acceptable to wear white clothing, especially shoes, from Memorial Day until Labor Day. However, fewer people follow this rule, and many wear white clothing year-round.

This observance is a federal holiday in which all non-essential government offices, as well as schools, businesses, and other organizations, are closed. Most public transit systems operate on special schedules. Many people use the long weekend to take short trips or visit family and friends, which can cause congestion on highways and at airports.
