Take your time, here we present the areas experiencing heavier traffic flow due to the main pipe and sewer project

Authorities urge individuals heading to the waterfront or port areas, including Petco Park, the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, and the Convention Center, to plan ahead, allow extra time, seek alternative routes, or utilize public transportation. Currently, an expansion of over 4,000 linear feet of the main sewer pipeline is underway along Harbor Drive from Park Boulevard to Beardsley Street, impacting areas like downtown Barrio Logan.

The new pipeline, set to replace the existing one installed in 1941 and rehabilitated in 1979, will provide renewed infrastructure to support additional and projected wastewater flows in the area.

The construction of the Harbor Drive main sewer pipeline project is progressing through four phases:

Phase 1 - Geotechnical and subsurface investigations along the project route on Harbor Drive.

Phase 2 - Installation of new sewer pipes along Park Boulevard from Harbor Drive to Imperial Avenue and Imperial Avenue from Park Boulevard to 12th Avenue.

Phase 3 - Installation of new sewer pipes and steel conveyance tubes under railway crossings on Park Boulevard between Tony Gwynn Drive and Harbor Drive.

Phase 4 - Installation of new sewer pipes and steel conveyance tubes along Harbor Drive between Park Boulevard and Beardsley Street.

Phases 1, 2, and 3 are currently underway, with Phase 4 expected to commence in the coming months. The entire project is slated for completion by early 2025.

During construction, lanes on Harbor Drive from Park Boulevard to Beardsley Street will be reduced to one, with the southbound side closed. When new pipe installation begins, all southbound lanes for vehicles and bicycles will be closed to facilitate tunnel operations.

Traffic will be shifted to the two northbound lanes, with a shared traffic lane for vehicles and bicycles in each direction.

Access for businesses and residents in the area will be maintained, but traffic delays are expected. Travelers are advised to use alternative routes around the construction area or utilize public transportation. The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) offers several options within close proximity to the affected area, including the 12th & Imperial Light Rail station with access to all three light rail lines and the Gaslamp Quarter station of the Green Line Light Rail, as well as various bus routes.

Signage indicating open lanes will be in place throughout the project. Emergency vehicle access will be maintained at all times.
