From the Mexico City Metro to France

You've probably noticed in recent weeks that the issue of bedbugs has been very active on social media, as users of Line A of the Mexico City Metro reported finding these insects on the trains.

This was followed by the suspension of classes in the faculties of Political Science, Law, Chemistry, and Veterinary Medicine at UNAM to fumigate the facilities in response to a possible infestation.

After inspections, UNAM stated that no bedbugs were detected, but the University Program for Research on Epidemiological and Emerging Risks maintained that the images circulating on the internet of insect bites could indeed be from bedbugs, which do not pose risks of transmitting infectious diseases.

It appears that these insects are not only spreading in Mexico. In Paris, France, there have been reports of a massive increase in bedbugs in hotels, cinemas, hospitals, and public transportation, according to Wired.

But why are so many bedbugs going around the world? According to NatGeo, there are several causes, including the global increase in tourism, bedbugs' acquired immunity to chemicals used to eliminate them, and their alarmingly fast reproduction rate.

The proliferation of insects and other pests is also related to the increase in urbanization, as there are more favorable conditions for their reproduction.

For now, the French government has promised to take measures to reassure and protect the population due to the bedbug increase. Meanwhile, in Mexico, fumigation efforts are underway in areas where the presence of these insects has been reported.
