The incident occurred at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam

Thursday morning saw a man open fire on a hospital and an apartment in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The individual was wearing a bulletproof vest and targeted doctors and patients, killing two people and seriously injuring a 14-year-old girl.

Both medical staff and patients were forced to take extreme measures at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam. Some people evacuated immediately, while others chose to take refuge in hospital rooms, using makeshift signs to indicate their location.

The chief of police, Fred Westerbeke, informed the media that the perpetrator of this incident was a 32-year-old student residing in Rotterdam. He was apprehended in the same hospital with a gun in his possession. His identity remains anonymous. The individual began the shooting by firing at a 39-year-old woman in an apartment near his residence, and he also targeted her 14-year-old daughter, as Westerbeke recounted.

Subsequently, he headed to the Erasmus Medical Center, where he fatally shot a 46-year-old man, who was also a professor at the university hospital. Additionally, the assailant set fire to both locations.

The suspect has been cooperating with authorities, according to Westerbeke's statements.

The mayor of Rotterdam, Ahmed Aboutaleb, described this day as "dark" due to the tragedy that occurred.

Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima expressed their sorrow on social media, sending their condolences to the families of the victims of the violence that occurred in Rotterdam this afternoon. They also expressed their solidarity with all those who experienced the horror of these terrible events.

Initially, the Erasmus Medical Center urged the community to avoid the area, but later announced its reopening.
