Denisse Ahumada Martínez could face up to 10 years in prison in the United States

Denisse Ahumada Martínez, the City Councilwoman of Reynosa, pleaded guilty to the distribution and sale of cocaine in the United States on September 18th. The plea was submitted to the federal court of Brooks County, Texas, where she could face a sentence of eight to 10 years in prison.

Although she faces a harsh sentence, Ahumada Martínez reached a plea agreement with U.S. authorities that could reduce her prison term by up to 20 percent. She received this reduction in exchange for her cooperation with the authorities. It's worth mentioning that Denisse refrained from admitting guilt to "conspiracy as part of a group."

Ahumada Martínez was initially arrested on June 10th this year after being stopped at a checkpoint in Falfurrias, Texas, with 42 kilograms of cocaine hidden in her white Mazda van. Although she was released at that time, she was arrested again on June 16th for drug possession.

The final sentence will be determined by the United States Court in Texas in the coming days, temporarily closing yet another chapter in the long history of ties between public officials and illicit activities in the region.
