The USL Championship team looks for a spot in the Playoffs 2023

San Diego Loyal SC scored in each half to finish a five-match homestand with a 2-2 draw against New Mexico United Saturday night at Torero Stadium.

Adrien Perez scored an early goal while Tumi Moshobane sent one in seconds after coming on as a second half substitute in the USL Championship match between Western Conference rivals. Kyle Colonna and Amando Moreno scored for the visitors in the fifth-straight draw between the clubs. SD Loyal earned another point in the standings as it now heads to Texas to face Rio Grande Valley FC on Saturday, Aug. 26 (5 p.m. PT).

SD Loyal was quick to open the scoring Saturday night when Perez found the net on a corner kick by Joe Corona. Perez was the second header off the corner after Grant Stoneman got the initial touch just outside the six-yard box. It was Perez’ sixth goal of the season.

New Mexico United answered the SD Loyal score five minutes later, also on a corner kick. Kyle Colonna got a header on the ball, sending it to the heart of the six-yard box towards goal where Koke Vegas tried to slap it out but missed.

Head Coach Nate Miller’s team continued pressing and found the go-ahead score when Moshobane poked in a cross by Charlie Adams in the 55th minute. Moshobane added his fourth goal of 2023 and 21st of his SD Loyal career in what was his first touch of the match. The club’s all-time leading scorer finished the cross from Adams, who dribbled to the endline before sending his pass.

The visitors would find the tying-goal late in the match when Amando Moreno sent a right-footed shot past Vegas just 13 seconds into stoppage time. The forward brought down a deep pass by Justin Portillo and sent it past the SD Loyal goalkeeper.

SD Loyal finished the homestand with a 2W-2L-1D record as it now heads to South Texas for its road affair against Rio Grande Valley FC on Saturday, Aug. 26 (5 p.m. PT). The club then returns to Torero Stadium Sunday, Sept. 3 to host Birmingham Legion FC.
