These Russian planes were identified by Danish air forces while flying towards the NATO-monitored area in the Netherlands

Two fighter jets from the Royal Netherlands Air Force took off in response to a Quick Reaction Alert to intercept two Russian bombers heading towards Dutch airspace over the North Sea, the Dutch Ministry of Defense reported on Monday, August 14th. These Russian planes were identified by Danish air forces while flying towards the NATO-monitored area in the Netherlands.

The Danish government confirmed that the Russian planes changed course and moved away from NATO airspace. The Dutch F-16 fighter jets returned to their base in Volkel, emphasizing the importance of a swift response in such situations.

A spokesperson for the Dutch Air Force explained that plane interceptions occur when aircraft lack a unique identification code, flight plan, or two-way communication. Moreover, he noted that Russian aircraft incursions near or into European airspace are not uncommon.

The Netherlands and Belgium share the responsibility of protecting the airspace in the Benelux region, with the Dutch taking charge since mid-April. Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense later reported activating a MiG-29 aircraft in response to a Norwegian Air Force plane approaching Russian airspace over the Barents Sea, though they stated it had not entered their airspace.
