For several years, Mexico has been one of the closest allied countries to the United States. However, The New York Times indicated that this situation could change due to the criticisms and hostility towards our country from supporters and officials of the Republican Party.

According to the American newspaper, the new stance towards Mexico represents a change in Republican policy, as even in the early days of Donald Trump's presidency, a significant number of voters pointed out that Mexico was a US ally.

Now, that sector is almost evenly divided, and a significant portion (43%) considers Mexico an enemy, according to a survey conducted by the firm YouGov.

Despite these data, the most extreme example of the change in stance is the proposals made by some Republican presidential candidates, such as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis or Senator Tim Scott, to send troops to our country to combat drug trafficking.

In addition to this, there are individuals who have centered their policies on alleged disdain towards Mexican and Latino people, especially concerning immigration issues.

For now, The Times mentioned that the calls positioning Mexico as an enemy have not been a national focal point because the Republican campaign is still in an early phase. It also highlighted that presidential primary elections are a time when politicians tend to take more extreme positions before moderating them in the general elections.
