The police chief expressed his dismay over the tragic loss.
In a devastating incident, two parents from Florida are responsible for the death of their 18-month-old baby after leaving her unattended for hours in a car that reached extremely high temperatures. According to reports from the Polk County Police, the couple had been celebrating the 4th of July with a night of drinking and drug use before committing the fatal negligence.
Police Chief Grady Judd expressed his dismay over the tragic loss, calling it one of the "most horrifying and tragic" things he has witnessed in a long time. Joel and Jazmine Rondón, both 33 years old and residents of Lakeland, now face charges of aggravated involuntary manslaughter of a minor.
According to authorities, the couple took their three children, all under the age of nine, to a party on the evening of July 4th. During the event, the Rondóns consumed alcohol and marijuana. It wasn't until 3 a.m. the next day that they returned home with the children. While unpacking the car, Jazmine asked Joel to take care of the 18-month-old baby while she tended to the other two children, aged eight and six, and brought them inside.
Unfortunately, Joel mistakenly assumed that the baby had also been taken inside when he saw the car doors closed. The family went to sleep with the little one still in the car. It wasn't until an hour later, when Joel woke up at 10 a.m. to go to work, that he realized something was terribly wrong. According to the police, Joel asked one of his children to check on the baby in her bedroom.
Not finding her there, Joel frantically searched the entire house without success. He had the tragic realization when he went outside and found the girl sitting in her car seat, still strapped in with the seatbelt. He brought her inside the house, and together with Jazmine, they rushed her to the Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
"While it was painfully obvious that the child had suffered a terrible death, the staff at Lakeland Regional still tried to save her life," Judd said at a press conference.
Seventeen hours after arriving home, both parents were subjected to drug tests. The investigation revealed that Jazmine tested positive for alcohol and marijuana, while Joel tested positive for alcohol, marijuana, and methamphetamine.Report by El Nuevo Herald via their website.
"One can't help but imagine the state of drug intoxication they were in when they returned from the party and forgot about the child in the back seat of the car," Judd commented.
An autopsy determined that the cause of the child's death was hyperthermia due to being left in the car. Judd noted that this was likely due to the high temperatures reaching 95 degrees Fahrenheit, with the temperature inside the vehicle possibly reaching between 130 and 170 degrees.
On Monday, the entire planet experienced the hottest day since at least 1979, breaking records that lasted until Tuesday.
"The child clearly wasn't old enough to free herself from the seatbelt, but she was old enough to realize she was suffering a horrific death due to the negligence of her irresponsible parents," Judd concluded. Report by El Nuevo Herald via their website.
