Data to be considered for the search

French researchers have deployed a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) capable of exploring the seabed and transmitting images to the surface. The vehicle, known as Victor 6000, is equipped with two mechanical arms that allow delicate maneuvers such as cutting or removing debris.

In addition, the arrival of another ROV called Juliet, which is being transported from Jersey, is expected. Juliet has previously explored the remains of the Titanic for approximately 200 hours.

Meanwhile, the United States Coast Guard has confirmed that the search and rescue operation is still ongoing. The search area has been expanded, now covering approximately 10,000 square miles of ocean, and aircraft, ships, and other equipment are being used to conduct the search.

According to Professor Blair Thornton, an expert in marine autonomy at the University of Southampton, the search process in a square kilometer area using an ROV requires the use of multiple parallel lines, at least 30 or more, if cameras and sonar are used.

Thornton also points out that an ROV typically moves at a speed comparable to that of a human, which implies that it could take between 5 and 10 hours to fully scan the entire area in question.

The submarine, with five people on board, lost contact on Sunday while descending towards the Titanic shipwreck.

So far, the US Coast Guard has reported the discovery of a debris field near the Titanic shipwreck, and experts are currently assessing the area.

Data to be considered

  • The Titan belongs to OceanGate Expeditions, a private company that organizes expeditions to shipwreck and underwater canyon sites. On this trip, it partnered with the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland.

  • The ship experienced a loss of communication, and its signal disappeared approximately one hour and 45 minutes after starting its descent into the depths of the ocean on Sunday, June 18, 2023.

  • Initial estimates regarding the availability of oxygen for the occupants ranged from 70 to 96 hours.

  • The submersible vessel Titan vanished off the coast of Newfoundland after descending nearly four kilometers to the location of the Titanic shipwreck.

  • The Titan is the world's only manned submersible that is purportedly capable of carrying five people to depths of up to 4,000 meters.

  • There are five people aboard the Titan, including the creator and pilot Stockton Rush, as well as Hamish Harding, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet.

  • David Locridge, the operations director, reported that the submersible needed further testing to ensure it could descend to 4,000 meters, information that was "ignored," and he was dismissed.

  • The submarine did not undergo regulatory authorities that would approve or verify the safety of the submarine.

  • Some parts of the Titan were assembled using parts purchased from camping stores, and the cameras installed on the vessel are the same ones that can be found in electronics stores or online.

  • The submarine is operated using a video game controller, specifically from the Logitech brand.
