UN growth forecasts are lower than those of the International Monetary Fund
According to a report by the United Nations (UN) published on Tuesday, global economic growth in 2023 is estimated to be 2.3%, which is 0.4 percentage points higher than the prediction made in January. However, the forecast for 2024 has decreased by 0.2 percentage points, reaching 2.5%.
The UN report, titled "World Economic Situation and Prospects" and published by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, points out that despite this recovery, the growth rate remains significantly lower than the average recorded in the two decades prior to the pandemic, which was 3.1%.
The UN growth forecasts are lower than those of the International Monetary Fund, which earlier this year indicated that global growth would decline to 2.9% in 2023 from the 3.4% recorded in 2022, and would slightly recover to 3.1% in 2024.
The UN report highlights that while the prospects for the United States, the European Union, and China have improved, "many developing countries have seen their growth prospects deteriorate due to tightening credit conditions and rising external financing costs."
Additionally, the report mentions that a growth rate of 4.1% is expected for least developed countries in 2023 and 5.2% in 2024, which is well below the 7% growth target set in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The UN predicts a growth rate of 1.1% for the United States in 2023, compared to the 0.4% forecasted in January; a growth rate of 0.9% for the European Union in 2023, up from the previous 0.2%; and a growth rate of 5.3% for China, contrasting with the previously estimated 4.8%.
