The OFAC reported four members associated with the Sinaloa Cartel identified for trafficking fentanyl.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the United States Department of the Treasury has sanctioned Joaquín Guzmán Lopez, one of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán Loera's sons, and four members of the Sinaloa Cartel, along with two entities based in Mexico.

The individuals and entities have been designated according to Executive Order 14059, which aims to combat illicit fentanyl and other deadly drugs trafficking to the United States.

The Sinaloa Cartel controls drug trafficking in key regions of Mexico, particularly along the Pacific coast, and uses these strategic points to traffic various illicit drugs, including fentanyl, heroin, and methamphetamine to the United States.

The four sons of "El Chapo," collectively known as "Los Chapitos," have inherited the leadership of the Sinaloa Cartel after their father's arrest and extradition to the United States. OFAC has previously designated the brothers and their half-brother, Ovidio Guzmán López, in 2012 and 2021, respectively.

Joaquín Guzmán Lopez, designated today, is involved in overseeing various aspects of Los Chapitos' drug trafficking empire, such as the administration of super labs, which are often supplied by a network managed by the brothers Ludim and Luis Alfonso Zamudio Lerma. OFAC designated the Zamudio Lerma brothers in February 2023.
